Last spring, when we were looking for houses, there was one in serious contention located in the Town of Kaukauna. Not far from the house was a little place called Out-o-town Supper Club. Ever since, I have always wondered what could have been.

So we called up a friend who lives near by Out-o-town and met her there. Out-o-town, or as I like to say, Outtatown, has a giant bar area. Perfect for a supper club. We took a seat in the bend and I ordered the usual. Brandy old fashioned sour with olives.

The bartender grabbed a highball and filled it with ice. Then carefully began pouring the brandy followed by their in-house mix. The drink was topped off with a few spritzes of soda and olives.

I HAD to know what was in their mix! Turns out, simply 10 lbs of sugar, 3 bottles of bitter and water.

All I could taste was brandy and sweetness, but at $3.50 a drink, I really couldn't complain!

...So here's the deal. Since the beginning, it hasn't just been about the drink. I mean, it is...and it's the highest factor, but it's also about whether or not I want to come back to the place.

Don't get me wrong! Everyone at Outtatown was super friendly. The prices were great, but honestly, my food was mediocre and the drink was very sweet. Less mix and more soda would go a long way.

If you find yourself at Outtatown, get yourself a super cheap old fashioned. After dinner, get yourself a $4 ice cream drink, you deserve it. The place is worth experiencing once, but only if you're in the area, there's no need to go out of your way.

When Wilder's Pub and Bistro opened, I heard about it right away from a friend. Her and her husband would frequent Mister G's as it was conveniently located for them. The first thing I was told was that they were to have a brandy old fashioned tasting trio!

Too bad for us, this review is not about that tasting trio as when I patronized the establishment, all of the ingredients were not yet procured. So I had the usual brandy old fashioned sour.

Lucky for me, I saw one bartender craft the cocktail for a gentleman across the bar from me; whilst shortly after, a different bartender made one for me. The actions of the bartenders were very similar, except mine used less bitters. Which made me a bit bitter (bad pun). Also, my drink wasn't made with sugar, but the previous bartender used sugar. I assume they requested a sweet drink.

I was asked if I wanted a tall or short. I requested a tall. The bartender added two cherries, an orange slice and two shakes of bitters to the glass and then muddled with a glass muddler?! It was interesting looking... Afterwards, he added two shots.. that came from a regulator. After that the soda was added with olives on top.

If you've been a long time reader, you'll know that I'm not a fan of the liquor regulators. I understand that this is a new establishment and it's a cost-savings attempt. BUT, you are a new establishment and this isn't the best way to endear Wisconsin drinkers. The drink tasted fine. It was rang up as $4 long, $2 old fashioned, for a total of $6 for the drink. I'm meh about that. I don't feel like I got anything special for an extra $2. Not $2 of extra bitters.

The saving grace was that the food was outstanding as a "don't call me a gastropub" establishment. I'd go back, but not for the drinks. If you go, try the fried mac & cheese. It was wonderful as was the gumbo with risotto. It hit the spot for a cold sub-zero day.

While in search of our new "corner" bar we decided to try a bar that actually resides on a corner. Route 96 in Medina.

Never heard of Medina? You aren't the only one.

It's a small joint that was packed on a Friday night. Luckily, we showed up just before everyone else, with enough time to score two spots at the bar. Then suddenly, two DIFFERENT retirement parties show up. I didn't get a chance to explore the place to see how big it was, as I was locked into my corner spot of the bar.

The single bartender was impressive. She kept up with the drinks..all..night..long. I ordered the usual, a brandy old fashioned sour..with olives. She grabbed a pint glass, filled it with ice, added a nice long pour of brandy, followed by two single shakes of the bitters and topped it off with Squirt soda.

Real talk here. We all know that 50/50 is the king of all old fashioned mixers. I mean, check out this lengthy conversation that occurred on Facebook, one December evening.

HOWEVER, Squirt is an acceptable substitute in a bar situation, it's much tastier than Sprite or 7-Up. The drink could have used another shake or two of bitters. But with a price of $4 and the heavy pour of brandy, it's a solid bar-made brandy old fashioned.

As far as the rest of the experience of Route 96? The staff was friendly, the place was hopping, it had good bar food.. but just didn't feel like it would be OUR go-to.

However, I would return... definitely. It's a great establishment to simply, just go drinking and get a basket of deep fried foods. Bonus points, they have a patio! Nothing wrong with that. Cheap, good drinks. Fried food. #wisconsinlife

Another Friday night and another chance to try a new place in my new neck of the woods. I did some Facebooking and Googlating, and came up with the Loose Wheel.

We arrived, the place was fairly empty for a Friday. Now granted, it was the Friday before New Year's Eve. So maybe others were saving their gusto for the weekend?

After bellying up to the bar, I ordered the usual, a brandy old fashioned sour with olives. The drink was made with ice, a few shakes of bitters, a heavy pour of Artistocrat brandy, followed by soda and olives.

The price came in at $4.50 and the drink was average.

If you've been a long time reader, you'll know that usually my review will end there. One time shot. Get it right, or pay the price. But not this time. This time, I was impressed by the other bartender who came over when our drinks were running low. This bartender, John, noticed the hat my husband was wearing and connected with him, as they are both from Michigan and chatted about the bowl game that was on.

Then he asked me if he could make me his *flaming* orange old fashioned. Of course you may! And he did. He made it the same way, as noted above, however, as he built the concoction, he noted the importance of a proper dash of bitters, which means fully tipping up the bottle of bitters, getting a whole dash. I appreciated that note.

Afterwards, he added his special bitters and then grabbed a rind of orange and well, watch for yourself:

The orange essence truly comes out in this cocktail. It really elevated the drink for me. To a whole new experience. On top of that, John crafted a few other cocktails for me that evening. It was a great night out!

I've been back since, while the food is still good, the bar service and drinks are spotty. But if you go, and John's there, you are in for a real treat.

In a previous entry, I told you about how I crashed the girl's night out at Ruby Owl. While we were hanging out, we were talking about supper clubs and how, for all of us, it had been awhile since we had been to one. They were listing off a bunch, all which I had never been to. So, we decided we needed to go to one.

My friend chose Biggar's Supper Club in Winneconne. So we made the trek.

What a cute place! It 100% felt like a supper club in all the best ways. A huge bar and with small dining area. Behind the bar was a nice, updated wood paneling wall with tasteful Thanksgiving decor. A giant chalk board was in the center that listed all of the specials. On a small bar in a wall nook was a bowl of community spicy, snack blend.

We were pleasantly surprised that the tables in the bar area had a waitress. So we had a few cocktails before dinner. I, of course, ordered the usual. A brandy old fashioned sour with olives.

The drink was made with ice, then a squirt of simple syrup, 3 shakes of bitters and topped off with a nice long pour of brandy and soda.

Because of the simple syrup, the drink was pretty sweet. Surprisingly, it also wasn't very aromatic. Perhaps it needed to be shook to release the bitters?

Even so, the atmosphere of the club required that I keep drinking the old fashioned cocktails. They were definitely good (just not great). Plus the pour was good at $4.25 a cocktail.

Other things to note about Biggar's that makes is special is that they give out 50 cent pieces for change. Plus the bread comes in a koozie (like a drink koozie). Just like Cedar Lodge, you order in the bar, before you are seated in the dining area.

Very quaint. I would go back, no questions asked.

We all have that place that after work, we go to. For the summer, it was Jeff's. I will miss that place. Seriously, the BEST bartenders. The best food. I could go on. And I have. See here.

Now that we've moved, we need a new place. While visiting our house a few times, we've kept going back to The StoneYard. I think this might be the place (for now, until we explore more). It's not as quaint, and well, as awesome as Jeff's, but it ticks the box for having great boneless wings and that, frankly, is all my husband wants.

We found ourselves there on a Friday and it only seemed right to find out how this place ranks on the blog. So I ordered, the usual, a brandy old fashioned sour, with olives.

I glanced away, only for a moment, and missed the first actions of the drink. I thought I saw her add syrup, a cherry, orange, then 2 and half shots of Aristocrat, then ice, lots (lots!) of bitters, soda and then she vigorously stirred.

The drink was excellent. Everything that one would want in an old fashioned. It wasn't too sweet, so I don't think she actually added syrup. The extra shakes of bitters, really makes the drink shine.

The next few that I ordered, weren't as spectacular, but really, it's only the first one that counts. When she left, the second bartender was not as generous with the brandy. Once again, at that point it didn't matter.

I didn't see the bill, so I'm not sure the price, plus it was happy hour, but I suspect it was in the $4-4.50 range.

Definitely a great place to go on a Friday after work.
I was driving home and I received a text message that said "Running late, will be there in 15 minutes." WTF? I soon find out, there is a girl's night happening and I wasn't officially invited. Well, I forgave them and crashed the night at the Ruby Owl Tap Room.

Beers, for ages, have been under-rated. Not by me though. I appreciate the craft, but my body doesn't. So I avoid it. However, lucky for me, Ruby Owl has a great wine list and a full (beyond full) bar. So I ordered the usual. Brandy Old Fashioned Sour.

The bartender grabbed a high ball and added an orange, cherry, 2 shakes of bitters, a sugar packet AND then 2 shots of brandy. Then he muddled. Following that, he added ice and soda.
When I took my first sip, I knew immediately that something was off. Whatever type of soda they used (club maybe?) was flat. The drink was not at all sweet and very clean, so I assume flat club soda was used. The drink definitely needed more bitters. It wasn't perfect and was priced more (~$4.75) than the wine on special for the evening. So I switched to wine.

I love the atmosphere of Ruby. Very much a gastropub with TVs and exposed brick. The menu has some intriguing options. My rating is based on the price and the flat soda. It just wasn't the best old fashioned.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I broke my foot at the beginning of the year, then we put our house up for sale, then sold it and moved to a duplex, AND THEN we moved again to the outskirts of Hortonville area.

Besides that, in my opinion, summer just isn't a brandy old fashioned time of year. But with the weather finally turning, I hope to bring you lots more posts (and especially being in a new area!)

So let's get down to it. This one has been in the chamber for awhile. As I set the scene, it was EAA weekend. So awhile ago. But if you are someone who lives in the Oshkosh area, you know that during EAA, you really need to dig deep to find a place that's still in Oshkosh and doesn't have a 2-hour wait or a limited menu. So we dug deep and checked out Karmali's Bar and Grill.

Karmali's used to be George's Gaslight Inn. My old neighbor would have called it an Oshkosh institution. Sure enough, when we arrived, the place was not packed and did not have a limited menu.

From my recollection of George's, not too much had changed in Karmali's. A few minor decor changes, including an updated back bar, but nothing of great note.

We bellied up to the bar and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, we placed our drink order. I got the signature — a brandy old fashioned sour.

Well....... this bartender (who I believe is the new owner), has seen several seasons of Bar Rescue with Jon Taffer. The pours of alcohol were precise, if not a bit under. I didn't see the brandy used. The rest of the drink was just bitters, ice and soda with a garnish of olives. I don't recall the price, but I do remember it being reasonable (probably around the $3.75-4 range).

The biggest thing I noted was that the drinks were subpar for the expectations that a Wisconsinite has upon entering a bar located in a neighborhood and just off the beaten path. HOWEVER, with that said, I would go back. Why? Oh... the messy mozz sticks is seriously where it's at. We're talking hand breaded delightful logs of mozzarella, covered in a home-made tomato sauce (with just enough spice) and a yellow cheese sprinkled on top and then baked.

Crave worthy.

We also had their nachos, they were above average, for a bar, definitely a home-made feel on the nachos as well.

So we'll see how they do. The two appetizers we had were so good, but the lightly poured cocktails are meh.

The best part of having this blog is pretending how scientific my review system is. But, let's be real. It isn't. It's my particular tastes on that random day combined with the company I'm with and the ambiance of the bar. What I'm saying, make 2 crappy drinks with the same price and put them in two different bars and my feelings on them would probably be a bit different.

So cue, random Oshkosh bar—Jeff's On Rugby. Selling a house has put me in a temporary living arrangement that so happens to have a local corner bar. Who knows how I would have felt going to Jeff's if it wasn't so convenient. \ But the fact is, this bar is pretty damn close. So I entered the bar, wanting, willing, wishing, praying for it to be awesome.

And it was.

It doesn't get much more townie bar than it was. We arrived shortly after 4 p.m., when the doors opened, and the spots around the bar were sparse. We found two spots together and I ordered the standard affair, a brandy old fashioned sour.

The bartender (owner?) grabbed a highball and filled it with ice. Then came lots of bitters, a heck of a lot of rail brandy and then splash or two of soda. I mean a heck of a lot of brandy. He asked if I wanted a garnish, olives it was.

The drink? Potent. Nothing specially crafted, but for the ~$3 happy hour price and the 2+ shots of brandy, who could complain? I also loved that they had pull tabs for top shelf drinks. I switched to Korbel after my first and enjoyed playing pull tabs for the remainder of the night.

Jeff's is clean. Has free Valley popcorn. The locals were very nice. The bar was fun! It was Kentucky Derby day, and I always appreciate a good themed reason to gamble. The food (from what I remember, I may have imbibed a bit) was on point.

I may have went because of the proximity and to try to the old fashioned, but I will return because of the great service, the right price and the plentiful pours.

Go to Jeff's, but with the expectations of a great townie bar, not the best old fashioned ever.

On a rainy spring day, we decided to take a road trip and try out a supper club that our friends love to rave about. Tucked away in small town is Idlewile Inn. The Inn still has it's original tile floors and ornate woodwork from 1868. The place has floor to ceiling windows in the dining area and is simply gorgeous.
Before dinner, we had a few cocktails. I ordered a brandy old fashioned sour. The bartender made it by first adding two shots of Aristocrat brandy, topped it with a splash of grenadine, a few shakes of bitters, ice, and topped it with soda and olives.

It was boozy and not finely crafted. But the price was right at $4 for two full shots in a tiny cocktail glass. I switched to wine after having two cocktails. I wouldn't recommend making the drive out to Idlewile for their old fashioneds, but the rest of our experience was wonderful!

In true super club fashion, the table had crackers, breadsticks and butter waiting for us when we sat down. After we ordered, we had home-made breads, then soup. I ordered the sinfully delicious chicken enchilada. Then came the salad—I requested the home-made parmesan peppercorn. For my main course, I ordered the shrimp scampi and it was amazingly garlicky.

The experience was definitely a 5, but the old fashioned was only mediocre.

The Friday night crew decided to try Oshkosh's newer establishment, Uptown. OK, I can't lie, I don't think this place is that new, but it's new to me. I swear I was told it moved from Main Street, so maybe only this location is new?

Anyways, we entered the bar area, to have a few drinks while waiting for the rest of the crew to arrive. Uptown has a large bar area, with a giant circle bar in the middle. It happened to be Happy Hour, which is every day from 3-6:30 and has special appetizers and $1 off drinks. I ordered a brandy old fashioned sour.

The drink was made starting with ice, an unidentifiable rail brandy, 4 dashes of bitters and soda.

The drink was meh, but I did enjoy sitting at the bar with the locals. I like the tall ceiling and how clean the place was. My first drink was pretty strong for $3 and my second was less strong for $4. Dinner was fine for a random neighborhood bar in Oshkosh. And the happy hour specials are appreciated.

Despite all of this "meh", what is really special about Uptown is their Tom & Jerry's! They use the usual Manderfields mix, but their mixing of other alcohols is really phenomenal work. Best T&J I've had!

When I started this blog many years ago, there was one place that I had placed at the very top of my "to try" places—The Old Fashioned.

A friend's birthday brought me to this very place.

It was a sunny spring day, with a chill in the air still lingering. It also happened that later that day, Wisconsin was to play in a NCAA tournament game. Perfect day for Madison, perfect day for a brandy old fashioned. Upon entering the bar, it was not lost on me the many bottles of Korbel brandy that lined the shelves behind the bar (the bottles were accompanied by many other Wisconsin chachkies.) Of course, I ordered the usual, a brandy old fashioned sour.

The drink started with a highball glass and an oddly shaped brown nugget. The bartender then added few dashes of bitters, followed by a bit of soda water, an orange slice, a maraschino cherry and vigor muddling. Next came ice, the Korbel brandy (slightly over a shot) and soda from a Squirt can.

Doing my due diligence, I of course inquired about the brown nugget. I knew it was sugar, but couldn't be brown sugar, could it? Nope, of course not. It was natural raw sugar cane that was hand-rolled. Raw sugar has a distinctive color and flavor produced by keeping the sugar cane molasses in and around the crystals. It is not blended, colored or chemically refined. Did it make the drink taste any different? Nope.

The cocktail was good—I wished the brown nugget made the drink special, but it really didn't. Don't get me wrong, it was a great old fashioned! Super standard, not too sweet. At $5.50, it wasn't a steal and makes my final rating simply a 4 out of 5. What would make the drink better? Well, the price feels steep for a single shot and the namesake of the bar. Maybe I missed the olives? I wasn't asked for a garnish.

You know what was super solid? The cheese curds. They were greasy, had tons of dips to choose from. That was super special. I've thought about those for awhile since visiting.

Another special was their brandy slush! It was incredibly sweet, too much frozen juices—just like I remember as a child. (Yep, child). I recommend the extra Korbel on the top! If I were to go again, I'd ask for a bit less slush scooped from the ice cream container and a splash of soda on top to make it less sweet.

I'm addicted to Costco. Which probably isn't the best thing for a household of 2. We consume their pretzel rolls by the bag full–which is bad considering each bag has roughly 30some rolls in it. Add an artichoke dip or basil-garlic compote butter and yeesh, my pants are already feeling tight and we aren't even in December yet!

Costco has lots of goodies for this Thanksgiving weekend and Christmas...including a pumpkin pie that is larger than your hubcap. Amongst the rows and shelves, I found a goodie stored away at the end of one of the wine and liquor rows. The look of the bottle is what grabbed my attention–it read: SoulBoxer Brandy Old Fashioned. The label was fun and modern. Into my cart it went.

As per the label, this cocktail can be served over ice or with a sweet or sour soda. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry. If you've read my blogs, I prefer an olive with my old fashioned, but I couldn't find a spear (unprepared) and passed on the garnish.

I popped open the bottle and took a big whiff. Lots of bitters and aromatics filled my airways. Smells like the holidays. First, I tried the mix straight-up. It burned a bit going down. After another taste, I savored it. Not too sweet. Heavy on the bitters. A subtle fruity taste. Very tasty!

Next step was to pour in a bit of 50/50. It's my preferred soda to make a brandy old fashioned. I like the grapefruit tones in it and it's nostalgic for me. Growing up, the only time we ever had 50/50 was in Thanksgiving and Christmas. Occasionally, a can or two was leftover and would re-emerge at Easter.

Enough with the tangent–I like this mix even more with the 50/50! It really makes a perfect old fashioned! By far and away, this is the best mix I've had from a store. I'd recommend this mix for a party and for those who don't always want to have sugar cubes, bitters, brandy and cherries on hand. And for $18, this is a steal! This would make a great gift for your out-of-state relatives and friends.

According to their website, SoulBoxer Brandy Old Fashioned is out of Madison and is the first in their line of classic cocktails for people who care about the drink in their hand. Created to bartender specifications, the Brandy Old Fashioned is premium California brandy flavored with Door County cherries and real oranges, and blended with bitters and pure cane sugar to create a fresh take on an American classic. 12 servings.

I can't rave about this product enough. I will definitely be picking up a few more bottles on my next Costco trip. Perfect for the holidays!

So with that, I'm thankful for cocktails, especially those with bitters & brandy. I'm thankful for football. I'm thankful for my readers. And as for my typical holiday blogs, this one is dedicated to my dad who is no longer with me in person, but always on my mind.

Cheers!

This was not the first time I've gathered at Gather... but it was the first time that I ordered a brandy old fashioned sour w/olives. The bartender, Dee, insisted that she made a pretty dang good one.
I'll be the judge of that.

She grabbed a highball and started with a packet of sugar, followed by large, red, fresh (can they be fresh?) maraschino cherries and an orange slice. She then added Peychaud's aromatic cocktail bitters.

Wait, what?

According to Wikipedia, these bitters are gentian-based bitters, comparable to Angostura bitters, but with a lighter body, sweeter taste, and more floral aroma... which, of course lead me to figuring out what gentian-based meant...a type of flower. So, what have we learned today? Dee likes to add flowers to her old fashioneds.

So back to the cocktail making. Dee added the special flower bitters, followed by the traditional Angostura bitters, and then muddled all the items together. She carefully smelled the drink and added more bitters. That is a good sign!

She then added a tall pour of Korbel and squeeze in two lemon slices and topped the drink with seltzer water.

I wanted to love this cocktail. I didn't love it. The lemon over poured the nuance of the bitters—both the floral type and the bark type. Still, the drink was tasty, very light and not sugary. It was a wonderful time with my good friend and Dee and watching the local crazies gather. The drink was expensive at $6 for what it was.

Ultimately, I want to give Dee a 5 olive review, but my past experiences at Gather have not been worthy of that. So average it is. If Dee sticks around for awhile and other areas improve, this might be the first place I change a rating.

During the summer, my work travels brought me to Philadelphia. There’s a joke to be had about brotherly love, but this blog is about old fashioned cocktails and not the crazy adventures I had. (See this article. I accidentally snapchatted the event.)

Prior to the above noted adventures, I had a far less crazy evening that began at the Liberty Bell with the Miss USA crew and ended with cocktails at a local pub that included their version of the old fashioned.

I was unable to view the cocktail creation, so my dear friend/colleague of mine and I instead had to blind taste our cocktails. She said it was citrusy while I thought it tasted like an elaborate whiskey sour. Definitely little to no bitters were added (despite the word so prominent on their drink menu). There was a Morello or some other sour cherry used in the creation of the drink. It was a very hot day outside and this drink was not refreshing. It was too heavy.

If you ever find yourself at the Red Owl, don’t bother with their old fashioned, instead order the Hire’s Hooch. Now this was a spectacular drink! It was made with bourbon, victory root beer and was topped with a home-made lime and falernum (sugar) foam.
I think we all have one of those places that we’ve driven past several times and always thought to ourselves, “Hey! We should stop there sometime..” Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t.
I’m here to report—my places still go unvisited, but a good friend of mine has finally checked off her place. Tally Ho in Hayward.
When I woke up that morning, it was 64 degrees in the house. By the time we entered the bar, it was above 70 out, the cool wind of Fall made it old fashioned season once again. While the other two ladies opted for a Bloody Mary, I ordered the usual. Brandy old fashioned sour please… well, it didn’t quite roll off the tongue that easily (it’s been awhile), but it was ordered.

I was asked what kind of brandy I wanted—I went with Korbel. What size? Tall. So a pint glass was grabbed and 2 sugar packets were added. Then came a two cherries, an orange slice, just slightly more than 2 shots of Korbel. The shots of brandy was measured simply by feel from this veteran bartender (and probable owner). These ingredients were muddled before the bitters were added. Then came the ice, soda and elaborate garnish.

The drink was quite sweet, I'm not sure that an actual sour soda was used. The drink could have had more bitter for being a pint glass. The drink was average and a slightly over-priced at $7, but the service was great! The atmosphere was fun and their french onion soup was on point.
It was a fun little destination in the middle of nowhere. It didn't hurt that I won $50 on a bar slot machine and the weather was perfect. If you ever pass by Tally Ho, it's worth a pit stop.
Sorry for the delayed post, but life has been busy. Even so, when I heard that Packers Pub was closing, I found time to head over there to have one last brandy old fashioned in this classic Oshkosh establishment.

I grew up in the Milwaukee area, so when I first came to Oshkosh for school, I always got off at the South Park exit, because I was so excited be in town. Packers Pub existed on the corner of South Park and 20th Avenue for the last 40ish years. Sadly it has closed. I say sadly, not because it was a favorite of mine, but I have acquaintances that I know were regulars and I always felt welcome on the few times I imbibed there.

Besides, how can you not like a place with a carpeted bar?

On my last visit, I asked for the usual. The drink was made in a standard highball glass with ice, 1.5 shots of Aristocrat, a few dashes of bitters, a splash of grenadine, soda—and then surprisingly another splash of brandy on top. The bartender asked me for a garnish, I opted for olives. The total with this drink and a captain & coke came to $6.50.

The drink was average, nothing spectacular, but for the price, a great deal. It was nice to enjoy the carpeted bar one last time before it closed. Farewell old friend.

I met some friends for an after work cocktail at the Copperstill Bourbon Bar. By the time I arrived, they had already drank a round.

I loved that the bar was the center of attention in this small joint. I grabbed a stool and joined by friends. I didn’t have to wait too long to place my drink order. Of course, I ordered the usual—brandy old fashioned sour. The bartender gave me a strange look, “Really?” I replied, “Yes, really.” “I don’t want you to look like a fool in a bourbon bar, so I’ll give you whiskey.”

He then proceeded to make my drink, which was a dash of sugar, a splash of soda, 7 dashes of bitters, a squirt of cherry juice from a ketchup looking bottle, then a squirt of lemon juice from a similar bottle. He then quickly muddled and added a shot of whiskey. The drink was finished with ice and soda.

The drink was definitely tart--I assume from the lemon juice, although the drink didn't actually taste lemony. The drink was not at all sugary, but in fact very light and almost tasteless. Simply just tart. It's hard to rate the drink based on my experience. I get joking around...I really do. But it came off not as much as a joke but snobby. I didn't appreciate it. $4 for a single shot drink. No thanks.

I was shopping at my local Trader Joe's junior (shout out to Ski's Meat Market.. love you guys!) and saw a new bottle brandy old fashioned sour product. I had never previously seen the Philly's brand before. I was hesitant to purchase, as it was ~$12-14 a case (the exact price escapes me), but I've made a commitment to taste testing for the world, and I had to stick to it.

I enjoy the concept of bottled old fashioned cocktails--they make an awesome gift to those out of state, as well as being convenient for winter outings, like golfing on the ice. It is also boating season.. although I feel compelled to note, that I typically make a point to try to only consume old fashioned cocktails fall-early spring (which, TBH, is basically 9 months out of the year). Summer drinks for me are usually Prosecco, Vodka Champs, Vodka Clubs, Sangria and margaritas/daiquiris. However, I know some diehards drink BOFs year round.

My first bottle was a disaster. I didn't shake it. I can't lie. It was beyond awful that I didn't even finish the bottle. It tasted like artificial sugar mixed with cough syrup and didn't have a lot of flavor. The only good thing about it was all the bubbles it had.

In fact, it took me well over 2 months to try another bottle. This time though, I shook it too much. For when I popped off the bottle cap, it sprayed everywhere. It lost the bubbles this time, but the drink was a lot more tolerable. It is still definitely far too sugary for me, but the heavy bitters shines through. There is also a nice tang to it.

Each bottle is 12.7 FL OZ. So it averages out to about $4 a bottle, which contains 1.5 drinks (the bottle says 2, but let's be honest, this is Wisconsin). It has 8.5% alcohol.

I know what you are thinking, "If I were to pick Arty's (sour review / sweet review) or Philly's to bring to a gathering, which should it be?" Tough call. The price of Arty's has went up--noticeably. Plus they now sell only 4 small bottles for $8 in a pack. I think the flavor of Arty's is better, but I am upset that the cost has went up so significantly (it used to be 6 bottles for $8).

The real answer-- neither. I'd buy Korbel and all the fixings and make my own.

No rating.
My Friday friends were game for a pizza night and Glass Nickel was our place. I mean come on, who doesn’t want free nickel nuggets while having a brandy old fashioned?
The bartender asked if we wanted talls, with a slight laugh. Of course! He added 1 maraschino cherry and 1 slice of orange to the pint glass. He then used a loose sugar container and poured about 1 tablespoon into the glass followed by 4 shakes of bitters. This was an exact science as he muddle each glass with 5 grinds. Then came the ice and about 3 or so shots of Wisconsin Club brandy. The drink was topped off with a fair amount of soda and mixed in a shaker.

The drink was a bit sweet – the exact scientific recipe could be redacted to only using 1 teaspoon of sugar, a couple of more shakes of bitters and a bit more brandy for the tall version. Even so, it was tasty and a great presentation. The bartender was very fun and engaging, but I switched from the old fashioned. It just didn’t go well with pizza! Unfortunately, I don’t know the price of this drink.

OK Ladies & Gentlemen, this is what you have been waiting for.

Let’s face it. This is what *I* have been waiting for—an old fashioned cocktail tasting.

A co-worker of mine has been telling me about Osorio’s pairing menus for months now. I really was interested in going to one of their margarita pairings, because after all, they are a Latin cuisine restaurant. But I didn’t hesitate when I got the email that read...

Our Pairing Dinner for May is rapidly approaching. This month, we have used some fantastic, Wisconsin favorites for our inspiration and put our Latin twist on them. It all begins with the beloved, Eastern Wisconsin favorite: The Old Fashioned Cocktail! Our menu for this delightful feast - Old Fashioned Cocktail Pairing Dinner – is...

You can wait with abated breath to learn the menu (or look below). Let me set-up the scene. I arrived at Osorio’s just before 7pm. The place was packed. My only criticism of the night was that the event seemed a little chaotic and disorganized upon entering—it really wasn’t, I was just uniformed.
There was a table waiting for my colleagues and me. Then the event started.

The head bartender welcomed the crowd of 50-75 (yes! That huge!). He then went into the standard history of the drink. Alexander in the 1880’s in New York with Brandy, bitters & club soda. Yada yada. He talked about how he had never had the drink before moving here. It was nice.

I’d like to note that the Head Chef came out and talked about his Latin spin on all of the Wisconsin dishes. It was really fun to hear and of course taste. This isn’t a food blog, so I’m not going to comment on that too much. Just know, the food was awesome.

1st course: Cheese Curd Pupusa paired with a Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet

The first drink definitely needed more bitters. Very, very sweet. They used far too much sugar, even for the brandy sweet. It was sticky and couldn’t taste the brandy. The drink was hand muddled (I believe they all were).

P.S. The masa was a favorite.

2nd course: Latin Onion Soup paired with a Peach Bourbon Old Fashioned Sour

This was my favorite drink of the night—by a land slide! My first impression was pixie sticks! The drink wasn’t overly sweet, just had a great punch of peach flavor. It was actually very light and refreshing. I would like another one in my future.
3rd course: Roasted Duck Barbacoa on a Potato Pancake paired with a Rye Ginger Old Fashioned

Awful. I don’t think I’ve ever not finished an old fashioned in my life. This one wasn’t finished. It was all rye and extremely burning on the way down and while it sat in my stomach. One friend said they got a LOT of ginger flavor in their drink, but all I tasted was paint tarnish.

However—it was interesting to taste this cocktail with the sweet duck meal. It did really change the flavor of the drink to make it a lot more tolerable, but in the end, the damage was done.

4th course: Crème Puff with Bourbon-Cranberry Sauce with a Honey Nut Old Fashioned

This was the most subtle of the drinks. I would only get the honey nut on the very finish of the drink. I thought it was a very light cocktail, while others got a lot of honey in their drink. They liked the honey, but felt like it really stood out. I didn’t get that. There weren’t any aromatics in the drink like I’d expect from an old fashioned. It was a different twist, but not special.

Dinner began shortly after 7:00pm and ended around 8:30pm. It was nicely paced and for $59/person, it was priced reasonably for the experience. Considering, it would be difficult to think of several ways to make an old fashioned that is different enough for each course, I think they did an excellent job. While, I probably wouldn’t do an old fashioned tasting there again, I would definitely come back for another pairing menu. I also wouldn’t hesitate to order this Wisconsin classic at this Latin restaurant.

While I’ve lived on the Northside of Oshkosh for my entire Oshkosh residency, I can only recall going to Primo’s twice. Once for takeout and once for a retirement party. Neither visits stand out in my memory, but nor were they an appropriate representation of this restaurant.

My Friday friends (the other couple that my husband and I go out with on Fridays) and I decided to give Primo’s a try. We arrived just in time for their happy hour. During the week, the happy hour includes an appetizer bar, but not on Fridays. See what is included below.
I ordered the usual, a brandy old fashioned sour. The bartender grabbed a glass and added ice, of course, I winced. That’s never a good sign. After adding several shakes of bitters, the bartender pour the soda and Christian Brothers brandy into the glass at the same time. He then added an olive garnish.

The drink tasted like a brandy old fashioned sour—despite so many shakes of bitters. There was absolutely nothing special about the drink other than it costs 75 cents more than just a brandy and soda costs during happy hour. My drink was $3.00 and a rail brandy & soda only cost $2.25. Just like my drink, my entire experience at Primo was less than average.

The weather had finally got nice out and we were ready for an adventure. So my Friday friends and I ventured up to Appleton. We may or may not have taken a wrong turn or two, but we made it there!

The place was packed. Of course, it was a Friday during Lent. We had almost 2 hours to enjoy Mark’s bar. Being a professional, I quickly assessed the place and scouted out a couple who had been there awhile. Sure enough, only 15 minutes after being at Mark’s, we scored a table in the corner, where we would enjoy our many old fashioned cocktails.

Each one was made the same. First ice, then a long pour of a cherry substance from an unidentifiable bottle, a shot and half of Christian Brothers, soda and topped with olives. After each drink was made, I wondered why the bottle of bitters that was sitting on the bar was never used. I also, at first, just thought the cherry substance was some form of a Rose’s Grenadine, but the drink didn’t taste like grenadine, so that was weird!

Finally, after a few drinks and the place was slowing down, I asked the bartender to see the bottle. He said that the bottle was just an empty bottle filled with Mark’s secret recipe; however, if I wanted to come in during the day sometime, Mark would probably share it with me. The drink tasted like a proper-enough old fashioned. It was good enough for me to order several of them.

I wish it had a bit of the froth that comes with a muddled or shook drink, but it was quite enjoyable. It was a bit sweet, probably from that cherry-looking syrup, but not egregiously by any means. The drink was a bit pricey at $4.75, but with that crowd, I can see why they can price their drinks so high. Our overall dinner experience was very enjoyable—I’d definitely make the trip back. I’d even pay for the pricey brandy old fashioned.
